About

Terraphobia

Terraphobia is an Australian Christian thrash and death metal project formed in Melbourne, Victoria. Originally started in the 1980s under the name Lethal Dose, the band is led by guitarist, vocalist, and multi-instrumentalist Mick Jelinic (Michael Jelinic). Following Jelinic's acclaimed tenure with the influential Christian band Mortification, Terraphobia transitioned to operate primarily as a one-man band.

History

Terraphobia made its early mark on the metal scene in 1993 with the release of the EP Product Of Your Mind. During its formative years, the lineup included other musicians, and the songwriting reflected the intense Australian underground scene. The band released another EP, An Eye For An Eye, in 1997, and their first full-length album, Enemy Within, in 2001.

A major milestone in the project's history occurred when Mick Jelinic stepped in as the lead guitarist for the legendary Christian death metal band Mortification, recording albums and touring extensively. This experience deeply shaped his musical and spiritual perspective. In 2011, Jelinic revamped Terraphobia as a solo studio project, releasing the critically acclaimed album Evilution, where he recorded all instruments and vocals himself. The album was highly praised, later receiving limited vinyl reissues via labels like Roxx Records.

In 2015, the EP Terrafication: The Mort Years was released as a tribute to his era with Mortification. Later, in September 2022, Terraphobia unleashed the heavy album Rise through Darkstorm Records, driven by powerful singles such as "Eschaton" and "Golgotha".

Musical Style and Lyrical Themes

Terraphobia's sound is characterized by razor-sharp thrash metal riffs blended with the sheer aggression and guttural vocals typical of death metal. According to Mick Jelinic, the lyrics are inspired by thought-provoking subjects such as worldly corruption, war, and social injustice. Having a Christian upbringing and being directly influenced by his time in Mortification, themes involving faith, biblical redemption (like the crucifixion highlighted in "Golgotha"), and end-times eschatology ("Eschaton") are deeply rooted in the band's identity.
